In the prestigious UK Car of the Year Awards 2017, the Volvo V90 has won the award for the Best Estate Car. This is a particularly significant award, because it is voted on by professional motoring journalists who spend all their time living, breathing, testing and writing about cars, and this year, 27 of them from publications like The Sunday Times, Top Gear and Auto Express were on the panel.
Judge Neil Barnes commented the V90 was ‘simply gorgeous inside and out’ and that the V90 ‘made the estate car desirable again’. And the judges’ decision is hardly surprising when you consider the V90 in more depth. It’s based on the ground-breaking SPA platform, which means it’s built for safety, whilst having inherent capabilities for electrification and top-end infotainment technology – the 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, for example, has a unique setting to mirror the acoustics of Sweden’s Gothenburg Concert Hall. Advanced technology too is a major strength of the V90. There’s class-leading connectivity, including the option of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Volvo V90 D5 engine is pretty special too, benefiting from PowerPulse, a compressed air innovation to make the 2-litre engine as responsive as a much more powerful engine, without the need for inefficient high revs. And, of course, in such an innovative car, semi-autonomous drive technology comes as standard. Commenting proudly on the Best Estate Car Award, Jon Wakefield, Managing Director of Volvo Car UK, said
‘Winning this prestigious title is a tremendous result for Volvo. The V90 is our most technologically advanced and sophisticated estate ever, and with an interior that's as stunning as it is practical, it sets the standard by which all other estates must now be judged.’
