Exuberant, colourful and fun, the new Volvo XC40 has been created just for you, the driver who likes to be that bit more different. Marking a big first for Volvo, the new XC40 is set to take the small premium SUV segment by storm with its youthful, colourful approach to SUV design. Offering you a unique and highly individual car, the XC40 is available to order now from your local Volvo Cars London dealership.
Volvo designers took their inspiration for the interior colours and style of the new XC40 from sources ranging from high-end designer goods to street fashion and popular culture to generate an overall feel that combines a sense of youthfulness, whilst exuding a premium feel. The result is a plethora of choices, including a warm Lava Orange carpet and Oxide Red upholstery. The designers’ vision took shape inside the XC40 to create a set of unique trims and new materials to work with that reflects the style of urban architecture and cartography. These include felt-based carpets, door inserts and headliners made from natural materials. Infotainment is all taken care of with the Volvo Sensus system, with all functions easily accessible through a large touch screen, optimised for ease of use.
And there’s something on the inside of the XC40 that’s revolutionary. Volvo conducted a global research project to discover how people use their cars in terms of where they put everyday items. The result sees some super-smart solutions incorporated into the XC40 design. On most cars, speakers are invariably mounted in the doors, but this takes up valuable storage space. Volvo has designed a new kind of subwoofer that is air ventilated and mounted in the dashboard, so now there’s room in the door pockets for your laptop or tablet. A big issue was people using cup holders for their rubbish and other odds and ends. Volvo has incorporated a waste bin into the interior design and there are specific storage solutions for coins, credit cards and charging cables, so cup holders can once again be used for cups. And there’s somewhere specifically for your phone too, and it can incorporate a wireless charger and USB ports. In the glovebox, there’s a small foldaway hook to secure small items and there’s even storage under the two front seats. Overall, it means the end of clutter in your car.
Based on Volvo’s compact modular architecture, the exterior of the new Volvo XC40 is similarly fresh and vigorous. You’ll be able to choose from a wide palette of colours, including a solid, monochromatic theme, as well as being able to create your own combinations of intense colours. On the outside, the Volvo designers have worked to enhance the tough attitude exuded in the metal design of the XC40 with a selection of confident, urban colours.
Top Gear have tested the new Volvo XC40 against key rivals from Jaguar, BMW and DS. The conclusion being the XC40 is an easy winner, by taking a different path when it comes to crossover looks and ability. It's a fresh new crossover that no other brand can match.
